Cracked But Never Broken by Kari Holloway is a book that I will never forget. It reached into my heart and brought up all of those nostalgic feelings that I thought were gone.
The story line starts with a marine, Damien, just arriving home from service. He has been gone awhile, but he doesn’t expect so many changes. Things at Laughing P have been getting risky when Damien comes home right in the middle of it all.
Told in Damien’s perspective, you really get to feel the roots of this story. Those roots dig down deep as Damien fights inner demons and turns into someone he doesn’t want to be. The trigger of those demons was something that happens to the woman of his dreams, Lexi. When he finds out that he can’t always protect her from everything, he begins to doubt himself. He begins to doubt his feelings, his abilities, and his heart’s direction.
Damien goes into a cycle of depression and turns to alcohol to cope. He starts alienating himself from his family and the woman that he supposedly loves. As things start to speed by Damien, he gets stuck. The alcohol takes over him and he becomes that person that he never thought he would become. He became cracked.
Damien has a one of a kind twin brother Darien. His twin is the total opposite of Damien. Darien used to be the one that would mess up. Darien was the one that made all the mistakes. Darien was the one that would drink all the time and not care about life. Now, it is Damien doing all of those things and Darien becomes responsible, he becomes more aware, and he cleans up his act. This produces some kind of awakening in Damien’s cycle as he starts to notice Darien’s changed persona.
When Damien unexpectedly gets accused of being engaged to a woman that he cheated on Lexi with, Damien starts to realize what was happening and who was behind everything that was happening. He investigates further into what he had witnessed happen to Lexi and things weren’t as he thought.
Through all of this, he fought with himself about his feelings for Lexi. One moment he would love her, the next minute he was doubting if he ever loved her from the beginning. Overall, after he saw the way that his twin brother Darien looks at her, he learned more about that feeling that he calls love.
After Darien confronts some of Damien’s actions, Darien shows Damien how to healthily vent his anger and confusion. By handing him some supplies to stain the inside of their newly remodeled barn. Damien calms down and makes sure to sort through his feelings and thoughts. When everything is sorted, he knows exactly what he needs to do.
Cracked But Never Broken ends openly, making plenty of room for the sequel, Behind the Lens. I started to read the first part of the next book and guess what? It’s in Lexi’s point of view! So I have a feeling that I will enjoy it just as much!
There are some graphic sexual scenes and sexual violence in Cracked But Never Broken. Those scenes only add to the story and are very well written. There may be some suggestive language, but I easily looked over it. There wasn’t any guts and gore.
I enjoyed this book about self discovery, strength to overcome obstacles, and the real meaning of love through and through. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and I can’t wait to read the next one! ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Guess what, guys? There’s a sale happening right NOW with this book!
